After leaving my job as an allied educator, I became a full-fledged home tutor and tuition centre teacher whilst studying my last year in the university. I teach students from Primary school level to Secondary school level.
Allied Educator
Ministry of Education, Singapore
June 2010 to June 2014
As an allied educator, I worked closely with the school management for my work scope. My main job scope was to assist in the assigned subjected class, to assist the Science and English Department, as well as being involved in non-curriculum duties.
My duties and responsibilities in the subjected class included taking a small group of academically weaker students out from the class to teach, assisting the teacher in class in disciplinarian issues, taking over teaching when the teacher is not in, and providing consultation to students after class.
I was permanently stationed in the English and Science departments. Thus, my work scope was heavily involved in these fields. The responsibilities included downloading cohort exam papers, setting and marking worksheets, coordinating related events such as Science practical test, English oral, result monitoring, notice board updates, learning journeys and others.
As part of my non-curriculum duties, my experiences involved being part of the team in Staff-welfare Health, Honour Roles and Achievement Day. In the Staff-welfare Health team, my duty was to plan fun-filled activities that help balance work-life of the staff?s well-being. In Honour Roles and Achievement day, the major parts of the jobs were to collate the list of winners, print certificates, come up with emcee scripts and lastly, ensure that the prize giving ceremony went on smoothly.
My experience in the secondary school had brought a lot of reflection to myself. Significantly, they were learning more about myself as well as understanding that no one student is the same.
