- Implemented a Health and Safety system, using my knowledge from OHAS 1800:1 and NOSA Health and Safety System
- Ensure compliance to Mine Health and Safety act ? ensure all legal appointments was up to date
- Draw up and Implement a Construction manual that contractors had to comply too
- Was part of purchasing committee to select the most competent contractor to perform the tasks that were tendered?
- Contractor Management ? All contractors had to submit a file containing the following basic requirements to myself for approval
- Conducted a Baseline Risk Assessments for the construction of the new mine
- Drafting applicable Health and Safety Procedures and Mandatory Code of Practices and Policies
- Health and Safety Training on Procedures, Mandatory code of practices, HIV and Aids, Visible felt leadership, Use of Personal Protective Clothing, Hazardous substances, Basic fire fighting
- On site monitoring and doing task observation and visible felt leadership on activities carried out on the mine
- Health and Safety Meetings with employees and contractors
- Daily walk about inspection on the mine for compliance
- Attending project meeting and giving feedback on health and safety performance
- Did all purchasing of Health and Safety Equipment (Personal Protective Clothing, Alcohol and drug tests, Safety signs)
- Hand on approach on all the task that is taking place in the construction phase
- Legal Regulation used was Mine Health and Safety act, NEMA, COID, Rail Regulator and Construction Regulation.
- Submit a monthly Health and Safety Report
- Submit a monthly update report on the requirement of mining charter Milestones 2013

1. Reduce property damage on Heavy Mobile Equipment
b. Introducing the simulator on Heavy Mobile Equipment, train all operators on it and have a refresher training every 6 months
2. Approaching Health and Safety from Top to Bottom
a. The mine was divided into ?Zones? every manager was responsible for that section for Housekeeping
b. Introduce the concept of visible felt leadership
3. Interaction between Safety department and Production department
a. All Safety officers were allocated to a section in the plant. They attended all morning meeting. To actively approach to ensure they departments are trained in all Legal aspects, assisting in Risk Assessments, created health and safety awareness.
4. Once a year we had a Health and Safety day and all employees and contractors participate
I had three Safety Officers reporting to me, and one Occupational Hygiene Nurse and SHE administrator and security department
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance to Mine Health and Safety act ? ensure all legal appointments is in place, doing all legal inspections as required from the act
- Overall responsible for contractors and regular audit conducted and inspections on contractors
- Implementation of Global Group standards (Conveyer safety, People and Road Transport, Energy Isolation, Health Standard, Confine space standard, Stockpile standard)
- Ensure compliance to Rail Regulator act, and submission of quarterly Report to Rail Regulator
- Regular Audits in South Africa Mines, as well in Kenya and Zambia
- Drafting of Mandatory COP (Thermal COP, TMM COP, Minimum of fitness COP act, )
- Occupational Hygiene (Ensure Hygienists does proper sampling on dust, noise, vibration. Working with him on quarterly report)
- Correspondence with the Department of Mineral and Resources (Section 55 and 54)
- Summit monthly mining charter stats (Mile stones and learning Hubs)
- Monthly Reports on performance of Health and Safety
- Investigations on Incidents, Near Misses and serious excidents doing a full root cause analysis and implements corrective actions
- Drafting of Safe work procedures and maintaining
